“ VIN + OMI Could be called Sci-fi Magpies” BBC
The BBC were kind of right, like magpies we collect and we look forward into the distant future.
This year it’s our 20th Anniversary as VIN + OMI which kicked off in March with the launch of an exhibition showing the 5 years of work as part of our VIN + OMI X KING CHARLES III collaboration. Showing the processes and outfits made from the waste from his estates.
Many of the ideas and 'things’ we have collected end up on the catwalk. It could be found things or seeing problems and finding solutions. For example for this collection, we saw that the towel making industry was producing a lot of waste. This is now turned into a usable textile that pop up on our catwalk. The latex on the catwalk is from our own ethically run eco plantation in Malaysia that solves the problems we found with the latex production unethical and bad for the environment.
SCI-FI magpie features wood chippings and plant material that were taken from Sandringham, King Charles’ estate, and converted into textiles using our eco cellulose process that is kind to the planet. This will be worn by Bake Off’s Dame Prue Leith who at 84 is walking in her second ever show ( feel free to cheer when you see her )
Guest model Jo Wood will also be walking ( feel free to cheer again ! ) wearing recycled plastic textile. This textile, and our printed textile, is made from plastic waste from leading art brand Daler-Rowney. This is converted into a bonded recycled plastic textile that doesn’t release microfibres like standard recycled plastic textile, giving waste plastic a second, safe, life.
This season also focuses on our education programme that incorporates students from 6 universities worldwide who are working with us on research and eco recycling. Waste from the UK garment industry has been made into outfits on the catwalk. Students from UK universities and a team from Oxford Brookes University provide production support as part of an education programme in creative eco fashion.
This year also launches a new partnership with today’s hosts, The Other House, called The Green Thread which explores new ways of working with our shared values of sustainability and creativity; redefining fashion and hospitality.
This strong partnership will culminate with VIN + OMI taking over the soon-to-be-open The Other House Covent Garden, where VIN + OMI will be sustainable creative advisors and will hold VIN + OMI’s 20th Anniversary show and party in September.
Straight after the show the party will be upstairs as part of our ongoing partnership with Jagermeister UK who have supported our projects for many years.
